For a long time, orthodontic treatment focused mainly on children and adolescents. Braces and aligners still tend to be associated with younger patients, so it can be a surprise to learn that these appliances benefit adults as well. In fact, we are seeing more adult patients than ever before thanks to advances in modern techniques and technology! For those who have spent a lifetime feeling unhappy with the way their smile looks or functions, it can be very welcome news that there is no such thing as being too old for orthodontics. That’s why we’re debunking popular reasons for not getting adult braces!

There has never been a better time to explore everything orthodontic treatment has to offer, and Coppe + Sears is the perfect place to begin. We can treat a variety of orthodontic issues with a range of treatment options, including traditional metal braces and clear braces. While today’s braces are more aesthetically pleasing and comfortable than previous designs, some adult patients are still on the fence about using them. This is often due to a lack of knowledge about the orthodontic process itself, so keep reading below as we debunk some of the most common myths about braces for adults!

Myth: Braces are just for children and teens

Teens in braces is a pretty persistent stereotype, and it is true that they make up a large percentage of orthodontic patients. But as we mentioned above, braces and aligners can benefit children, teens, and adults, too! We have seen an increase in the number of adults exploring the idea of orthodontic treatment for several reasons.

As we get older, many of us tend to better understand how our oral health can impact our total body health. This can prompt some adults to take better care of their teeth and gums, which may include seeking out specialized dental care or orthodontic treatment.

Some of the adult patients we see have crooked teeth, incorrect jaw positioning, or other dental issues they have waited many years to correct, while others are simply looking to improve the cosmetic appearance of their smile. Whatever reason a patient has for seeking orthodontic treatment in adulthood, Dr. Sears and our expert team can create a beautiful smile for them with braces.

Debunking Popular Reasons For Not Getting Adult Braces

Myth: Braces will be too obvious

The last thing adults who are uncomfortable with their smile want is something that will draw more attention to their teeth. Fortunately, modern treatment options give patients multiple methods for achieving the results they desire! Coppe + Sears is proud to offer the following treatments to adult patients for a smile makeover.

Damon metal and Damon Clear braces

Traditional braces typically use elastic tie-ins, which may cause friction and pressure. This can make treatment less comfortable and sometimes add time to the treatment process. The Damon system uses passive, self-ligating braces to eliminate the need for any elastics or metal ties. The unique high-tech wires are also able to straighten the teeth faster, with fewer adjustments, and with less pressure.

Damon braces have a patented slide mechanism to hold the archwire in place while allowing the teeth to move freely and quickly without much friction. Like traditional braces, Damon metal braces are an efficient way to correct orthodontic issues that range from simple to severe. In some cases, they are able to work faster at closing gaps and aligning the teeth than other treatments might!

The Damon System has been designed to be more discreet than traditional braces, and it is also available in clear brackets. This option can be excellent for adult patients looking for a more discreet way to straighten their teeth.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners are technically an alternative to braces, but we believe they are worth knowing about, too! These exciting systems use a series of clear aligners to straighten the teeth instead of brackets, bands, and wires. The removable trays are made of a thermoplastic resin and are customized to fit snugly over the teeth for a comfortable fit. Because aligners are removable, patients have a bit more freedom and flexibility than braces patients do.

Patient compliance is an essential part of successful treatment with clear aligners. The trays must be worn for 20-22 hours per day throughout the orthodontic process and switched out with the next in the series every 1-2 weeks. This is what allows the aligners to keep up with the movement of the teeth over time, giving patients the superior results they are looking for.

All of our treatment options are a good fit for busy adults! Dr. Sears will recommend the best treatment for each patient based on their specific needs, lifestyle, and goals.

Myth: Braces are painful

Modern braces are able to move the teeth more gently and effectively than ever before, but the brackets and wires can sometimes irritate the sensitive tissue of the cheeks and gums. A patient may also experience some slight tenderness in the teeth or mouth following an adjustment appointment, or in the early days of treatment. Fortunately, this is only temporary and tends to resolve quickly on its own. Patients can help reduce discomfort by sticking to soft foods when their mouth is sore and using a warm compress or an ice pack for relief.

Myth: Braces are too expensive

Orthodontic treatment of any kind is an investment in the future of a patient’s smile, with benefits that can last a lifetime! Coppe + Sears will always go over the total cost of treatment before moving forward with the active phase. There are no hidden fees with our practice! After a consultation with Dr. Sears, we will outline what is included in the patient’s personalized treatment plan. This will generally include:

  • all appointments, including emergency visits
  • braces or aligners
  • retainers
